Gurudwara Shaheed Baba Jai Singh Khalakat Sahib, Baran

Gurudwara Shaheed Baba Jai Singh Khalakat Ji belonged to the village of Barn in District Patiala. He lived there with his family, which included his wife, Mata Dhan Kaur, his two sons, Bhai Kadaka Singh Ji and Bhai Khadak Singh Ji, and his two daughters-in-law. In the year 1810 (Samvat calendar), Nawab Abdus Samad Khan of Sirhind was traveling with his army from Sirhind to Patiala. When he reached near the village Mughal Majra (now known as Barn), he instructed his soldiers to find a Singh (Sikh) to carry some of his belongings. At that time, Baba Jai Singh Ji was bathing at the village well and was unaware of the Nawab’s arrival. The Nawab grew furious that Baba Jai Singh Ji had not come to greet him. The soldiers captured Baba Ji and brought him before the Nawab. The Nawab was pleased to see him, thinking that he could now punish Baba Ji. He questioned, "Why did you not greet us when we passed by your village ?" Baba Ji humbly replied, "I was unaware of your arrival, as my mind was absorbed in the remembrance of GURU SAHIB."The Nawab, filled with rage, said, "We will decide your fate in Patiala. For now, you will carry this load to Patiala." Baba Ji asked what the load contained ?, and the soldiers replied that it was the Nawab’s hookah. Baba Ji firmly responded, "I will not carry a load that includes a hookah." Angered by this, the Nawab summoned Baba Ji's family and commanded them to carry the load. They, too, refused, stating, "We are Amritdhari (baptized Sikhs) and cannot carry a hookah." In his rage, the Nawab ordered the execution of Baba Ji’s family, one by one, in front of him. Only Baba Ji's younger daughter-in-law, who was pregnant and had gone to her parental home in Ambala, survived. Finally, the Nawab martyred Baba Ji by hanging him upside down from a tree, flaying his back, and killing him. Later, the villagers came together and cremated the five martyrs at the site of their martyrdom. Baba Ji’s younger daughter-in-law later gave birth to a son in Ambala, ensuring the continuation of their lineage.
