Gurdwara Shri Shatranj Sahib, Basian
This sacred site is located in the village of Basiyan in the Ludhiana district. SHRI GURU GOBIND SINGH JI, on his journey from Anandpur Sahib to Damdama Sahib, stayed with Rai Kalla in Raikot. During his stay in Raikot, Guru Sahib learned about the martyrdom of his younger Sahibzadas (sons). While hunting with Rai Kalla, Guru Sahib often visited this place. Guru Sahib used to play chess here with Rai Kalla. At that time, the area was densely forested. When construction of the Gurdwara Sahib began, chess pieces were found buried at the site. Some of these pieces were taken home by the local villagers.
Historical Background – In Accordance with Charan Chalau Marg Gobind:
Before SHRI GURU GOBIND SINGH JI, SHRI GURU HARGOBIND SAHIB JI also visited this site. A saint named Faqir Baso used to reside here, and he had a discussion with Guru Sahib. After Guru Sahib departed, the saint built a small memorial (Thara) at the site. The samadhi (memorial) of Faqir Baso is still present within the Gurdwara Sahib.
