GURUDWARA SHRI MATTAN SAHIB is situated in the village Mattan, Distt Anantnag of Jammu & Kashmir. Village Mattan is situated on the Anantnag - Pahalgam Road. Its 62 Km from Srinagar. SHRI GURU NANAK DEV JI came here on his third Udasi and stayed for thirteen days. GURU SAHIB had discussion with Pandit Brahm Das, Who was very great Sanskrit Scholar and was very proud of his knowledge. He used to carry huge stock of books recited by him. When GURU SAHIB saw him coming, He said,
One may read thousands of books, with a cart load of books to follow,
One may study innumerable epics or fill,
One's cellars with volumes of study,
One may read for generations and generations,
And spend every month in the year studying
And one may read one's entire life,
Right up to one's last breath,
Sayeth Nanak, there is one truth God's name only,
All else is vanity of the egoistic mind.
When Pandit Brahm Das listened this, he fell on GURU SAHIB's feet. GURU SAHIB stayed for few days at Pandit Brahm Das's residence. A Muslim Saint also discussed religious aspect with GURU SAHIB.Mattan was site famous for the ruins of temples. Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa constructed Seven Gurudwara Sahib's on the twin side of Springs, in which SHRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB were installed. These GURUDWARA SAHIB were removed in Dogra Rule in 1905-1909.
The group of Kashmiri Pandits of Mattan Village visited SHRI GURU TEG BAHADUR SAHIB JI with request to save them and there religion. And for whom GURU SAHIB did a supreme sacrifice in the history.
